Steven Devine (harpsichord)

Acclaimed harpsichordist Steven Devine continues his four volume survey of Jean-Philippe Rameau's works for harpsichord with the third book of his Pièces de Clavecin.

Some of the last music for solo harpsichord composed by Rameau, these masterpieces of the French Baroque make a huge contribution to the harpsichord repertoire. Written shortly after the completion of the second book, these two suites represent the most substantial of the three books of Pièces de Clavecin, and are a further mixture of traditional suite movements and fascinating character pieces, in particular the deceptive 'Les Trois Mains' and humorous depiction of 'La Poulet'.

Released in the 250th anniversary of the composer's death, Devine again performs on a copy by Ian Tucker of an instrument by Andreas Ruckers (1636) with ravalement by Henri Hemsch (1763).

'I gave a warm welcome to Volume 1 of Steven Devine’s planned 4-volume recordings of Rameau’s keyboard music and I see no reason not to extend the same courtesy to Volume 2 containing [...] these performances strongly challenge existing recommendations.'
